With education as it primary strategic focus, the N.C.B Foundation provides individual financial assistance to students through a Scholarships and Grants programme. Students pursuing studies in local institutions from the primary to tertiary level can benefit from this programme and for the 2019/20 academic year, over $40M is available. 

Successful applicants will receive financial benefits under the categories of Traditional or Non-Traditional Programmes.

Traditional Programmes

Scholarships
Available to students pursuing tertiary education. Recipients must be first-year entrants.

• Parish Champion: $300,000
• National Champion: $500,000

Grants
One-off support, specifically to assist with tuition, accommodation or educational supplies. Available to all students at the tertiary, secondary and primary school.

• We Believe in You (WBIY) Fund: Up to $100,000
• Teacher Education Grant: Up to $100,000
• Book Voucher: $10,000 to $20,000 awarded to students at the primary to sixth form level.

Non-Traditional Programmes

Scholarships

Available to students pursuing tertiary education. Recipients must be first-year entrants.

• Gold - $250,000

Grants

One-off support, specifically to assist with tuition, accommodation or educational supplies.

• Silver - $150,000
• Bronze – Up to $100,000

The Innovative, Creative, Outstanding and Nationalistic (I.C.O.N.) award introduced in 2016, is designated for tertiary students exploring the non-traditional fields of study, including, but not limited to:

• Animation
• Aviation
• Computer Science
• Engineering
• Logistics and Supply Chain Management
• Teaching Degrees specializing in Mathematics and Science for the CSEC and CAPE levels
• Fashion Designing
• Fine Arts

Caribbean Actuarial Scholarship

The Caribbean Actuarial Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Basil L. and Monica G. Virtue by their son-in-law, S. Michael McLaughlin, FSA, MAAA, an actuary who graduated from UWI. The scholarship is intended to be an annual award to University of the West Indies (UWI) actuarial student(s) who demonstrate a strong record of accomplishment, leadership qualities and commitment to becoming an actuary.

Qualifications include:
• Must be an undergraduate student entering their second or third year at the University of the West Indies
• Must be enrolled in UWI’s actuarial science program
• Must hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent

Award

$2,000 - student entering second year of studies; $3,000 - student entering third year of studies. $1,000 floating scholarship.

BGLC Tertiary Education Grant

Applications for 2019-2020 BGLC Tertiary Education Grant will reopen in May 2019

The annual Betting Gaming & Lotteries Commission Education Grant is awarded to undergraduate students who will either begin 1st year studies at accredited local tertiary institutions or are  currently enrolled to continue studies. The BGLC Tertiary Education Grant is given to tertiary level student(s) who best meet the requirements outlined below.

Guidelines for the BGLC Tertiary Education Grant

The BGLC Education Grant is open to graduating high school seniors and students currently enrolled at accredited local tertiary institutions. The Grant award is paid directly to the educational institution in the student's name.

Applicants must meet the following guidelines:

• Be no older than 26 years at September in the year of application
• Confirmed to attend, or currently attend an accredited local tertiary institution
• Must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
• Must have acquired acceptance to, or be enrolled at the institution of his/her choice and enrolled for the semester beginning September of the year of application
• Submit the completed Essay on the specified topic
• Provide 2 References on the Referee Affidavit Form and submit with the application in the Referee’s own sealed envelope addressed to the BGLC.
• All applications and supporting documents must be received by the stipulated deadline date

BGLC Education Grant applications are to be submitted on the BGLC’s authorised form which will be available when applications open in May 2019.

About the scholarship 

The UWI Open Scholarship is one of the ways that The University of the West Indies seeks to attract and reward all-round high achievers among the region’s high school students, community and state college graduates and first-year students of The UWI. Scholarships are available for study at any of The UWI’s four campuses.

Who can apply?

You are eligible for The UWI Open Scholarship if you : 

…Are a first time applicant of any UWI undergraduate degree programme offered at any campus. (Applicants must not already be holders of an undergraduate degree.) 

...Have gained at least 8 subjects at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CSEC) level including Mathematics and English A with Grades 1 or 2; at least 6 Units of CAPE including Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies, at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) Units l and/or ll; 

or equivalent at GCE O / A Levels with grades 1 or 2.

...Have completed an associate degree from a community or state college with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.6 and have applied to or are in the process of applying to The UWI.

...Have completed the first year of a UWI undergraduate degree programme with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.6.
 ...Are a citizen of one of The UWI’s contributing countries (proof of citizenship will be required).

What does the scholarship cover?

The UWI Open Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, residence costs (on/off campus) and contributions to books and meals. 

Note: Nationals of Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago will only receive support for maintenance costs. Maintenance costs will be linked to costs listed in the relevant campus Financial Information Booklets. This information is available on each campus website. 

How to apply?

Step 1: Complete the online application form.

Step 2: Supporting documents can be emailed to rhqobus@uwimona.edu.jm with the subject line: ‘The UWI OPEN SCHOLARSHIP’.

The supporting documents include:

• A 500-word personal essay outlining career aspirations, reason for choice of degree programme, community involvement and co-curricular activities. 
  
  
• Evidence of leadership positions at school, university and/or within the wider community; community involvement; and co-curricular activities.
  
  
• Two letters of reference – one of which must come from an academic referee attesting to the applicant’s academic ability and potential, demonstrated leadership qualities, and character. (Referees must have known the applicant for at least two years. All referees must affix the official stamp of their office/department/organization).
  
  

The COMPLETED online application Form which includes the 500-word personal essay and ALL supporting documents MUST be submitted by the deadline stated above.
